The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
An airbox is not merely a housing for a filter. Its inlet is positioned deliberately — away from engine heat, away from the wheel's spray, in air as clean and as still as the bodywork allows — and its volume is tuned to the pulses the engine sends back up the intake tract. All of that is thrown away by an open-element conversion and all of it is kept by a panel that sits inside the standard box. The PM155S is the second kind of part.
Key Features
- Works inside the series airbox, so inlet position and box volume are unchanged
- Dry polyester weave at 80 microns, cleaned with air and never oiled
- About double the filtering surface of other performance elements for this housing
- No modification to the bodywork, the ducting or the engine mapping
- Reusable for the life of the machine, with two years of warranty from purchase
- Sealing frame dimensioned for the standard lid
What the box is doing
The 890 draws from a chosen point on the motorcycle, and the chamber behind that inlet damps the pressure waves a large parallel twin sends back towards it. The manufacturer developed the fuelling with all of it in place. An exposed cone filter alters the acoustic length, the air temperature and the dirt exposure at once, and everything downstream then has to be re-established. Replacing only the medium alters none of it.
Dirt exposure is part of the design too
Where the inlet sits is a filtration decision before the element is involved at all: air taken from high under the tank carries less of what the front wheel throws up than air taken from an exposed cone beside the frame. On an adventure bike used on unsealed roads that difference is worth more than any medium specification. So keep the box and improve the panel — and be clear about what improving the panel does. It lowers the restriction and holds it there through cleaning cycles. It does not add power to a standard 890.
Care and cleaning
The panel comes out for an air-line clean from the clean face outwards, which is all most riding requires. After deep dust or mud, wash it by hand in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water leaves clean and dry it in air with no heat applied at any point. Refit dry, seat the frame all the way round, close the lid. The illustrated Sprint Filter procedure is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the KTM 890 Adventure and its L and R variants, 2021 to 2026. The same element serves twelve further machines built around this airbox across KTM and Husqvarna, all listed with years in the Fitment tab.
