The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The F 850 GS is the version of this platform that people put real mileage on — commuted, loaded, ridden through the months when nicer bikes stay indoors. Paper handles that life in one direction only. It leaves the parts counter at its lowest restriction and closes up from there, and because the loss arrives in fractions there is never a day on which anything feels wrong. The Sprint Filter P08 PM188S is a dry woven polyester element for the standard airbox that gets cleaned back to where it started rather than thrown away, which changes what the filter costs across the years the bike is kept.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave filtering at 80 microns and flowing 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- One layer, woven from threads of 22 microns and upwards rather than pressed from pulp
- About double the filtering area of other performance elements
- Cleaned and refitted: Sprint Filter designs it to last the life of the motorcycle
- Straight swap in the series airbox — nothing cut, nothing relocated, no remap
- Two years of warranty from the date of purchase
What a loaded paper cartridge actually costs
Two bills arrive and only one of them is on an invoice. The visible one is the replacement itself, repeated at every interval for as long as the bike is owned, and a machine used through grit, salt and rain reaches those intervals quickly. The invisible one runs the whole time in between: an element part way through its life makes the engine draw against a higher pressure drop for every kilometre until somebody finally changes it. A washable element deals with both. It resets instead of degrading, and the reset is an air line and a few minutes rather than an order and a wait.
Being honest about the gain
It would be easy to describe this as a performance part, and it is not one. A standard F 850 GS with a fresh paper cartridge and the same bike with the PM188S fitted will not separate on any measurement worth quoting. The difference is in the shape of the curve rather than its height: the intake begins at a lower restriction and holds it across the interval instead of quietly tightening, so the throttle response the bike had when the filter went in is the response it still has when the next service comes round. A part that is maintained rather than consumed is worth having for that alone.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine and it is enough most of the time, directed from the clean face outwards and never the other way. A hard winter earns a wash: lukewarm water, a mild detergent, rinsing until nothing more comes out, then a full dry in open air. Never heat it, never hold it near a flame, and refit it dry — there is no oiling step to remember. Sprint Filter's maintenance instructions are in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW F 850 GS from 2017 to 2026. The same PM188S element seals into the airbox used across BMW's F range and by machines from Kove and Voge; the Fitment tab lists them all.
