DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 07905-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 90 N/mm, 295 mm long with a 82.25 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 07905-31
  • Free length 295 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 90 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 82.25 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

The Numbers That Matter

At 295 mm free length and 82.25 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 90 N/mm

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
