DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 60281-29 is a shock absorber spring rated at 90 N/mm, 135 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Free length 135 mm
- Measured spring rate 90 N/mm
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 55 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 60281-29
Manufacture and Tolerance
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
Dimensions
The 46 mm bore and 135 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 90 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Where This Rate Belongs
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.
Installation
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
