DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 21040-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 51 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 21040-19
- 82 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 160 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.
Size and Rate
At 160 mm free length and 51 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
What This Rate Does
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Fitting
Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
