DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00596-17 is a shock absorber spring rated at 66 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Free length 270 mm
  • 133 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 66 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 00596-17

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 270 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
