DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 58 N/mm, 255 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 06310-13
  • Free length 255 mm
  • Measured spring rate 58 N/mm
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

Manufacture and Tolerance

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Size and Rate

At 255 mm free length and 61 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
