DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00596-10 is a shock absorber spring rated at 52 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Öhlins part number 00596-10
- Free length 270 mm
- 148 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 52 N/mm
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Straight-wound, constant rate
Manufacture and Tolerance
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.
Dimensions
Free length 270 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 52 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Where This Rate Belongs
If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
Fitting
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
