Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 240 mm
- Measured spring rate 41 N/mm
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Powder-coated black

How Öhlins Makes Them
Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.
Dimensions
Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 240 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 41 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.
Applications
Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
Fitting
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
