DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 38 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 38 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 06310-03
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 230 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 38 N/mm

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Fitting

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
