DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-01 is a shock absorber spring rated at 34 N/mm, 225 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 06310-01
  • Measured spring rate 34 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Free length 225 mm
  • 140 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 225 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

Fitting

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
