DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-93 is a shock absorber spring rated at 230 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01096-93
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 75 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 230 N/mm
  • Free length 190 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

Dimensions

Free length 190 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 230 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Installation

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
