DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60015-88 is a shock absorber spring rated at 190 N/mm, 85 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Get the rear rate wrong and the machine sits at the wrong height before it has moved a metre.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 34 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 60015-88
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 85 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 190 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 85 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Rate and Sag

The right rate is the one that reaches Öhlins' sag targets with the preload adjuster somewhere in its working range, not wound fully in or fully out. Rate decides how much of the shock's travel the machine uses at rest and under load; preload only moves where that travel starts. Too soft a spring shows up as a rear end that sits low and uses its travel early; too firm, as one that stays high and skips over small bumps.

How a Rear Spring Works

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and a shock whose spring seats take this diameter and length is a candidate. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the shock it is going onto.

Fitting

Note the preload setting before dismantling — it is a useful reference when setting up the new spring. Refit the shock with the preload still wound off, then set preload with the machine back on its wheels. With the shock off the machine anyway, it is a sensible moment to check the mounting bolts and, where fitted, the linkage bearings.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
