DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01093-64 is a shock absorber spring rated at 160 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 160 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 150 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01093-64
  • 65 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 150 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 160 N/mm.

Choosing 160 N/mm

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

What Fitting Involves

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
