DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60480-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 16-26 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated black
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 60480-02
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Progressively wound
  • Measured spring rate 16-26 N/mm (progressive)

How Öhlins Makes Them

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 230 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Rate and the Linkage

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Installation

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
