DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-39 is a shock absorber spring rated at 110 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 21040-39
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Measured spring rate 110 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 74 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 160 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 110 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Fitting

The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
