DescriptionThe whole story▼
Few motocross riders ever practise stopping as a skill of its own, yet a good share of every lap time is decided in the braking zones. A Yamaha YZ450F reaches the end of any straight with plenty of speed, and its front brake does most of the work of shedding it, so learning to use it late and firmly pays off lap after lap. For the YZ450F from 2016 to 2022, Accossato lists the DK268: a one-piece fixed front disc, steel according to the supplier, 270 mm across, 3 mm thick and interchangeable with the original.
Key Features
- Fixed front brake disc for the Yamaha YZ450F, 2016 to 2022
- Single-piece steel disc, as the supplier describes it
- 270 mm across, 118 mm inside diameter
- 3 mm thickness
- Six 6.5 mm holes, 134 mm hole circle
- Replaces the original front disc directly
- Minimum working thickness printed on the disc
- No German ABE documented; for motocross and competition
Construction and Material Quality
There is nothing to assemble on the DK268. It is one part, with the friction band running round a 118 mm centre opening and six bolt holes of 6.5 mm, spaced on a 134 mm pitch circle, where it meets the hub. The supplier calls it steel-made. Accossato attributes the effectiveness of its brake discs to a specific design and an accurate choice of raw materials, and traces both back to racing in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3. Like every disc the company makes, the DK268 has its minimum working thickness printed on it, and Accossato is clear about why that matters: a disc worn too thin can break under extreme stress.
Two Cones and a Straight
Riding coaches often teach hard stops on a separate straight rather than on the track itself. Two cones on a flat, grippy stretch of ground mark the braking point, and the rider approaches at a set speed in a set gear, brakes hard and tries to stop in the shortest possible distance without locking the front wheel. The lessons are in the details: weight slides back, knees grip the bike, elbows stay up and the front brake is squeezed progressively with one or two fingers while the right foot adds a little rear brake. With each run the braking point moves closer to the cone. On a YZ450F a session like this shows where the grip ends and how far the fork dives, things that are hard to learn among other riders on race day. It is also demanding for the brake. A string of hard stops in quick succession builds heat fast, so give the disc a minute to cool between runs and look at the pads afterwards. A drill day on the YZ450F is also a good moment to measure the disc: starting from a thickness of just 3 mm, it does not take much wear to reach the printed minimum.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK268 for the YZ450F from 2016 to 2022 as the replacement for the single front disc. The same years also have a floating alternative, the DK269, which is larger in diameter. Bikes from 2003 to 2015 take the DK111 instead, and the rear disc for the whole period from 2003 to 2022 is the DK168. For the controls of this Yamaha, Accossato lists the B8265 brake lever and the C7266 clutch lever. Tighten the disc bolts to the figure in Yamaha's manual.
Road Approval
Accossato's DK268 has no German ABE and no documented type approval; it is intended for motocross tracks and racing.
