DescriptionThe whole story▼

Cross-country racing keeps you on the pegs for long stretches, and on a Yamaha YZ250FX that makes the angle of the controls worth getting right. A brake lever set for sitting leaves the wrist bent when you stand, and a bent wrist soon gets tired. Accossato's B8265 is a folding brake lever for the YZ250FX of 2020 and 2021, CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075, with a short blade for three fingers and a joint that allows it to fold forward in a fall.

Key Features

  • Folding brake lever for the Yamaha YZ250FX, model years 2020 and 2021
  • Replaces the stock lever on the original front brake master cylinder
  • Short blade, three-finger layout
  • Anti-break joint allows the blade to fold forward on impact
  • CNC-machined from solid Ergal 7075 in Italy
  • Black, blue or green blade with a dark base
  • No German ABE documented; for off-road competition

Construction and Material Quality

The B8265 has the short blade Accossato uses on its off-road brake levers, sized for three fingers. It is made in two parts from solid Ergal 7075, a high-strength aluminium alloy, and machined on CNC equipment in Italy. The dark base holds the pivot on the master cylinder; the blade, in black, blue or green, hangs from a joint at the base that allows it to fold. Accossato sums up what it wants from the design in three words: strength, lightness and reliability.

Standing on the Pegs

When you stand on the pegs, your arms reach down and forward to the bars, and the brake lever should sit on the line of your forearm so that the fingers fall onto the blade with the wrist straight. Many riders rotate the master cylinder slightly downwards on the bar to achieve this. Check the setting by standing in the attack position in the garage, knees bent, elbows up, and resting the fingers on the lever. If the wrist has to bend upwards to get there, the lever is set too high.

The payoff is endurance. On a YZ250FX in a long cross-country race, a straight wrist stays fresh, and the fingers can cover the brake for longer, ready to squeeze without shifting the hand on the grip. When the bike does go down, the setting makes little difference to the impact, but the joint in the B8265 does: it allows the blade to swing forward rather than snap. There is no promise that it survives every fall, only a fair chance of finishing with a working front brake, and in a race of several hours that is worth having.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the B8265 for the Yamaha YZ250FX in the 2020 and 2021 model years, and it replaces the original lever on the stock front brake master cylinder. The C7266 folding clutch lever covers the same two years. The clutch lever is made in black or blue; this brake lever adds green.

Road Approval

There is no documented German ABE for the B8265. It is sold for off-road competition, the kind of riding the YZ250FX is built for.
