Rain is the reason most roads look clean, and it is also the reason a great deal of dust is never counted. Falling water pulls suspended particles down and washes the surface, and an open country road gets that treatment several times a week. The places this CB400 spends much of its life often do not: tunnels and underpasses, multi-storey and basement parking, and the standing columns of traffic where the same body of air is worked over by hundreds of engines before anything replaces it. That air keeps its fine fraction. OM184P14 is the element specified for it — a dry nonwoven rated at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec.
Key Features
- 14 µm filtration at a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec, Sprint Filter’s specification for dusty air
- Dry polyester nonwoven, never oiled, so nothing can travel downstream onto a sensor
- A depth medium: particles are held through the thickness of the mat, not only at its face
- Roughly twice the working area of a conventional performance filter
- Sits in the standard airbox exactly where the original panel did — no modification, no remap
- Washed and refitted rather than consumed; two years of guarantee from purchase
Air that never gets rinsed
Sheltered air is not merely dirtier air, it is differently sorted. The coarse part of anything thrown into the air comes down quickly under its own weight; what stays up is the small end, and under a roof or between walls it stays up longer, because there is no weather to take it away. Brake and tyre abrasion, the fine mineral powder ground off road surfaces, soot from cold engines: none of it is dramatic to look at, and all of it sits in the size band where a standard weave has the least to say.
What the finer mat costs
Nothing here is free, and no intake element makes a standard CB400 stronger. Fourteen microns buys retention and pays for it in flow: 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard OM184S at 80 µm. Two consequences follow. The engine has less rated capacity in reserve than it had, which on a road-registered 400 it very rarely reaches; and the mat reaches its cleaning point sooner, because it is holding more. Riders whose kilometres are mostly open, rained-on roads are better served by the standard weave. The choice runs sideways between two specifications, not upward.
Care and cleaning
Blow OM184P14 through with compressed air on the clean side, so the load leaves by the face it entered. Heavier soiling comes out in warm water with a mild dish soap; rinse until clear. No heat of any kind — no hairdryer, no exhaust, no flame — and nothing goes back into the airbox damp. Dry it in still air and refit it dry, with no oil or dressing applied. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
OM184P14 is listed for two machines: the Honda CB400 Super Four (1998–2006) and the CB400 Revo / Super Bol d’Or (2008–2026). The same housing takes all three cloths listed for this model, so only the specification changes with the choice. Match your build year against the compatibility list before ordering.
