Most 390 Dukes spend their working week doing something no brochure photograph ever shows, which is sitting in traffic. That is also where the airbox meets the worst air it will ever draw: brake dust, tyre rubber and exhaust from the vehicle ahead, at a speed that gives none of it anywhere to disperse. PM293S puts dry woven polyester into the standard housing in place of the paper panel, and it can be cleaned and refitted rather than binned.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester with threads from ø 22 microns — the number describes the thread, not the gap between threads
- Filters at 80 microns alongside a flow rate of 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Filtering area roughly double that of other performance filters
- No oil anywhere in the intake, so nothing can settle on a sensor further downstream
- Drops into the production airbox unaltered: no modification, no remapping
- Two years of warranty, starting at purchase
The dirtiest air is not out on the open road
Commuting loads a filter faster than the odometer suggests. Stationary traffic supplies a dense mix of brake and tyre particles at almost no airflow, and short journeys mean the engine is often still warming through when it arrives. Distance covered is therefore a poor guide to when the element wants looking at; the type of riding is a far better one. Since inspecting this element costs nothing beyond the time to open the housing, the sensible interval is whatever the bike's week actually looks like.
The shape of the curve between services
None of this makes a standard 390 faster. What is worth having is how restriction behaves in the weeks after a service. A paper panel climbs steadily as it fills and is reset only by buying another one. A dry weave is brought back close to its starting point with compressed air, as often as the riding demands it. Across a commuting year that is the difference between an intake that is only right for the first month after a service and one that is right for most of them.
Care and cleaning
Direct compressed air through from the clean side, working outward. Once city grime has gone past what air will move, warm water and a mild detergent are next, followed by rinsing until the water carries nothing away. Dry it in air alone, at a distance from heat and flame, and refit it only when it is completely dry. There is no oiling step in the process at all. The Downloads tab holds Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the KTM 390 Duke built between 2024 and 2026. The element is shared by seven entries across the current KTM and Husqvarna singles, and the Fitment tab shows the complete list. A 390 Duke from before 2024 runs on an earlier Sprint Filter code; check what year the machine was built before ordering.
