DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Monster 821 Dark leaves out the colour: matt black paint and very little brightwork, a bike for riders who prefer understatement. Many of these Monsters are ridden daily and looked after at home, and the small jobs, the oil check among them, fall to the owner. After any such job one question remains, namely whether everything has stayed tight. For the Dark of 2015 to 2020, Accossato lists the FP004, an aluminium oil filler cap with an M20x2.5 thread, CNC-machined and anodised in eight colours.

Key Features

  • Oil filler cap for the Ducati Monster 821 Dark, 2015 to 2020
  • Thread M20x2.5, as given by Accossato
  • Aluminium, CNC-machined, anodised
  • Eight colours: black, titanium, silver, gold, red, orange, blue, green
  • Usable on other bikes with the same cap size after checking
  • Black or titanium keep the Dark entirely dark
  • No German ABE documented; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato mills the FP004 on CNC machines and anodises it afterwards, so the colour belongs to the surface of the metal. On a matt black Monster 821 Dark, black or titanium keep the look closed and quiet, silver lightens it slightly, and gold, red, orange, blue or green become a single spot of colour on an otherwise dark machine. The thread is M20x2.5. Accossato says the cap suits the applications on its list and can be adapted to other motorcycles with the same cap size, so the thread is the thing to check if you are unsure.

A Sheet of Cardboard Under the Engine

Small leaks rarely announce themselves while you ride. They turn up later as a drop on the floor, and in a shared courtyard or a rented garage that drop quickly becomes somebody else's concern as well. An old workshop habit catches them early: after any work on the engine, park the bike overnight over a clean sheet of cardboard, and the next morning any mark on it shows where to look. The oil job itself follows a few simple rules. Open the filler only when the engine is off and has cooled down. Read the level exactly as the owner's manual of the Monster 821 Dark sets out, and add oil in small amounts, checking again before pouring more. Keep dirt out of the opening, clean the thread and the sealing face, and turn the FP004 in with your fingers until it seats, with no extra force. Then go for a ride. Afterwards the engine has been warm, the oil has circulated, and the cardboard under the parked bike gives an honest answer. If it stays clean and the filler area is dry, the job is finished; if not, find the cause before riding again.

Fitment and Compatibility

For the FP004, Accossato's list gives the Monster 821 Dark of 2015 to 2020. Because the cap is defined by its M20x2.5 thread, the manufacturer says it can also be adapted to other motorcycles with the same cap size. We catalogue the same part for the standard Monster 821, the Monster 795 and the Hypermotard 950 SP. If you are unsure which cap your Dark wears today, compare its thread before ordering.

Road Approval

For the FP004 we hold neither an ABE nor any other test document; it is therefore offered for racing and competition.
