That is not a neutral state for an airbox. A stationary intake is an open container with a filter across the top of it, and the dust that settles onto an element over five idle months arrives without any of it being recorded anywhere. The bike comes out of storage with an intake nobody has thought about since the last session. The Sprint Filter P14 PM164P14 makes the answer to that a ten-minute job rather than a parts order: a dry non-woven element filtering to 14 microns, cleaned with compressed air and refitted.

Key Features

Dry non-woven medium, never oiled — nothing to gum up, dry out or reapply after months in storage

14 micron filtration at an air flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec

Washable and reusable; compressed air from the clean side is the whole service

Roughly double the filtering surface carried by other performance filters

Goes into the standard airbox as it is: no modification, no remap

Two years of warranty; built to last the life of the motorcycle

The first session of the season

Whatever has settled in over the winter goes through the engine on the first day out, and that is the day the bike is asked for the most. Making the pre-season check include the element costs nothing once the element is washable, and it removes a variable from a day that has plenty already. The same applies to transport: a bike strapped in a van behind a wheel arch collects road dust for hours at a time without the engine ever running.

Which medium for which kind of use

An honest note on the choice. The P14 is the fine end of the range at 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec, and it gives up flow to get there. For a ZX-4RR ridden hard on a swept circuit, the standard P08 at 80 microns and 5,050, or the P08 F1-85 racing medium at 15,000, is the better trade. The P14 belongs on this bike when it is also used on dusty public roads, or stored and transported far more than it is ridden — which describes most track bikes honestly.

Care and cleaning

An element that has been standing collects dust without doing any work, so the blow-through — compressed air from the clean side, outwards, refit dry — belongs as much to the pre-season check as to the end-of-session clean, and on dusty roads it is worth repeating between both. The deeper version is lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear, followed by a full air dry. Heat and flame ruin the medium and are never used. It is never oiled.
