One detail in this family settles an argument before it can start. The P14 is the finer of the two dry media offered for the Hornet's airbox — 14 µm against the standard weave's 80 — and it is listed at around seven tenths of what the standard element costs. The finer cloth is the cheaper line. Whatever the relationship between these two parts is, it is not a ladder with a better rung near the top. They are two materials aimed at two kinds of air, and each is priced for what it is rather than for where it sits in an imagined order.
Key Features
- Fine dry non-woven, specified at 14 µm filtration and 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Captures within the depth of the fibre mat instead of across a woven surface
- Entirely oil-free, with nothing that can be carried onto the sensors downstream
- About twice the working cloth of a typical performance element
- Fits the standard housing where the paper panel came out; no change to ducting or fuelling
- Cleaned with air and put back rather than thrown away, and warranted for two years
What is actually being exchanged
The transaction is written in the two numbers. Filtration goes from 80 µm to 14; flow goes from 5,050 l/m²/sec to 1,800. Tighter material holds more back and lets less through, and it reaches its service point sooner because what it catches stays where it was caught. On a road twin the surrendered flow is rarely called upon, which is what makes the finer cloth reasonable here — but it is surrendered all the same, on clean days as well as dirty ones.
Reading a list that has no ranking in it
Sprint Filter's range runs from a 7 µm non-woven to an 85 µm racing weave, and the prices along that run do not climb with fineness. Nor should they, because there is nothing to climb: each material answers a different question about the air a particular motorcycle breathes. That also settles what the SM247P14 is not. It is not a power part, and no drop-in element makes a standard CB750 Hornet noticeably quicker. What it offers is finer capture in dusty use and a restriction that stays predictable, on a part that is serviced rather than consumed.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean side does the routine work, aimed outward so the load leaves the mat rather than travelling further into it. When more has accumulated than air will move, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Drying is open air only, at its own pace — heat guns, radiators and flames all destroy polyester — and it goes back in dry and untreated. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
