The two halves of this decision are not paid at the same time. The flow the P14 gives up is only missed when the engine is asking for everything it can get: wide open, high in the range, held there. The retention it adds is in effect every second the engine turns, in traffic, at a steady cruise, on the way to work. An S 1000 R spends the overwhelming majority of its running hours in the second condition and a few seconds at a time in the first, and that ratio, rather than any figure on its own, is the argument for PM171P14.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven at 14 µm, rated 1,800 l/m²/sec, made for dusty roads and long-distance use
- Run without oil from new, so nothing can be carried off the medium into the intake tract
- The P08 for this housing is rated 80 µm at 5,050 l/m²/sec — coarser, freer flowing, neither one better
- Replaces the paper panel in the standard airbox with no cutting, no repositioning and no remap
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted, rather than replaced at every service
- Built for the service life of the motorcycle and guaranteed for two years from purchase
Two clocks, running at different speeds
Read the two figures as what they are. A flow rating describes a rate through a square metre of medium under a given pull, and it becomes an argument only when a large volume is actually moving; below that it is a ceiling nobody is near. A filtration figure has no such condition attached. Whatever the engine draws goes through the medium first, at any throttle opening, in any gear. So the cost of this element is intermittent and the benefit is continuous, which is the shape of the trade that catalogue tables never show.
The case against, in the same breath
If the riding is quick, dry and on clean surfaces, the P08 is the better element for this airbox. The P14 is for owners whose roads bring the dust to them, and it should be chosen on that basis alone rather than on the assumption that finer is generally better. Neither element does what the accessory shelf is often assumed to do: in an unmodified airbox, no filter makes a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger. The gain is a filtration level matched to the conditions and a part that stops being a consumable.
Care and cleaning
Servicing is compressed air, applied to the clean side and blown outward, so that the load leaves along the path it came in on. A wash follows only when air has stopped being sufficient: lukewarm water, a mild washing-up detergent, rinsed until nothing more comes out. It then dries in moving air, away from every source of heat — a hot-air gun, a radiator or a flame will finish it far quicker than any road will. Refit it dry, with nothing applied. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
