DescriptionThe whole story▼
Fitted to the Kawasaki ZX4-R (2023–2026), the Öhlins KA 400 replaces the standard unit outright. The unit it replaces was chosen when the ZX4-R was costed, not when it was developed.
Key Features
- 36 mm piston diameter
- Supplied with Öhlins spring 21041-29
- Gas-pressurised damper with a piggyback external reservoir
- 50 mm of travel at the damper
- Twin-tube TTX damper layout
- Adjustable overall length for ride-height and geometry changes
- Adjustable compression damping via the gold click adjuster
- Integrated hydraulic spring-preload adjuster
The TTX GP in Detail
TTX is Öhlins' twin-tube architecture, and it exists to solve one specific problem: cavitation. Both circuits stay pressurised, which is what stops cavitation when the damper is worked quickly and repeatedly. Öhlins uses the same architecture in its racing programme; the TTX GP is that hardware sold over the counter.
What This Means on the ZX4-R
Öhlins covers the 4-year production run of this generation with a single part number, which means the mounting and the linkage stayed unchanged across it.
Damping Performance
Öhlins quotes 50 mm of damper stroke for this fitment. The recommended oil is 01309; using something else changes the damping the shim stack was set for. Spring part number 21041-29 is a separate catalogue item, so a rate change is inexpensive. 90 N/mm is the rate Öhlins selected after testing on the ZX4-R. Adjustment is by click rather than by feel, so a setting can be written down and returned to. Compression and rebound are adjusted independently, so support under load can be set without changing how fast the wheel returns.
How Öhlins Builds It
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Spring and damper are separate part numbers, so a rate change does not mean a new unit.
Fitment and Compatibility
Part number KA 400 and the Kawasaki ZX4-R (2023–2026) belong together; other model years take other numbers. 2 machines in the range take this number, the Kawasaki ZX4-R among them.
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the Kawasaki ZX4-R, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
