DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 21041-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 51 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 95 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 21041-31
- 74 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 150 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.
The Numbers That Matter
Öhlins holds the free length at 150 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
Installation
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
