DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06452-11 is a shock absorber spring rated at 90 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06452-11
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 220 mm
  • 112 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 90 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
