DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-29 is a shock absorber spring rated at 90 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 90 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 90 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01096-29

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 190 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 90 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Installation

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
