DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66396-52 is a shock absorber spring rated at 9-15 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 50 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 9-15 N/mm (progressive)
  • Inner diameter 50 mm
  • Öhlins part number 66396-52
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Progressively wound

Manufacture and Tolerance

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Dimensions

The 50 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 9-15 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
