DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 165 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 165 mm
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 60281-09
  • 76 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 165 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Fitting

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
