DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06774-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 06774-21
- Free length 260 mm
- Inner diameter 70 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 138 mm of usable stroke
Manufacture and Tolerance
Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
The Numbers That Matter
The 70 mm bore and 260 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 75 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Fitting
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
