DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05672-15 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 67 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 05672-15
  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 67 mm
  • Free length 270 mm
  • 144 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Dimensions

At 270 mm free length and 67 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 60 N/mm

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
