DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 58 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00698-13
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 58 N/mm
  • 125 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Dimensions

At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 58 N/mm

Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

What Fitting Involves

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
