DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01096-01 is a shock absorber spring rated at 34 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Free length 190 mm
- Öhlins part number 01096-01
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 34 N/mm
- 108 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.
Dimensions
At 190 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Choosing 34 N/mm
The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
What Fitting Involves
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
