DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60360-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 31-35 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 31-35 N/mm (progressive)
  • Öhlins part number 60360-08
  • 103 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Progressively wound

How Öhlins Makes Them

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Size and Rate

At 200 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

How a Rear Spring Works

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
