DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 28 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00281-49
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 300 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 28 N/mm
  • 166 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow

Manufacture and Tolerance

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Dimensions

At 300 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
