DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01104-92 is a shock absorber spring rated at 250 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 49 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01104-92
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 130 mm
  • Measured spring rate 250 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 130 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Installation

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
