DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00380-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20-29 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 200 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 20-29 N/mm (progressive)
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00380-06
  • Progressively wound
  • 120 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Dimensions

At 200 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Rate and the Linkage

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
