DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01099-74 is a shock absorber spring rated at 180 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01099-74
  • 85 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 180 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

Manufacture and Tolerance

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Dimensions

The 57 mm bore and 220 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 180 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 180 N/mm

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
