DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 21140-71 is a shock absorber spring rated at 175 N/mm, 100 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Free length 100 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Öhlins part number 21140-71
- Measured spring rate 175 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 51 mm
- 44 mm of usable stroke
Manufacture and Tolerance
The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 100 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 175 N/mm.
Choosing 175 N/mm
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
Installation
The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
