DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-04 is a shock absorber spring rated at 17 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 60281-04
  • Free length 150 mm
  • Measured spring rate 17 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 150 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 17 N/mm

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
