DescriptionThe whole story▼
A fall on the Aprilia RS 660, even a slow one in the gravel at the edge of a circuit, usually finds the dashboard before it finds anything a rider can easily replace: the instrument panel sits right where a toppling bike first makes contact with the ground. Melotti Racing's DC.AP.7211 Impact Absorber for the RS 660 exists specifically to keep that panel, and the display behind it, intact through exactly that kind of low-speed off.
Key Features
- Dashboard protection for the Aprilia RS 660, Melotti part DC.AP.7211
- Machined from a solid billet of aluminium alloy
- Technopolymer front panel shields the LCD display
- Quick-fix mounting for the front panel needs no tools
- Minimal footprint, fits without modifying the bike
- Elastic mounting absorbs shocks and vibration away from the electronics
- Black anodised finish
- Same part is also listed for the Tuono 660 and both Tuono V4 1100 versions
Construction and Material Quality
The absorber's body is machined from a solid billet of aluminium alloy rather than cast or stamped, which gives it the stiffness to stay in shape after a knock instead of folding into the display it is meant to protect. In front of the display itself sits a separate panel moulded from a technopolymer, chosen because it can take a graze across its surface without transmitting that impact straight into the LCD underneath. Melotti mounts that panel with what it calls a quick-fix system, a fitting carried over directly from its racing programme, which lets the panel be removed and refitted without a single tool; on a bike that gets wheeled in and out of a paddock all weekend, being able to check or swap that panel between sessions without hunting for a screwdriver is the point of building it that way. The whole unit mounts on an elastic fitting rather than a rigid one, so ordinary vibration and the odd sharp knock are absorbed by the mount itself rather than reaching the electronics behind the panel, and it is finished in black anodising to match the rest of the RS 660's cockpit.
Surviving the Gravel Trap
Run-off at a trackday rarely ends with the bike still upright, and once an RS 660 is sliding through gravel on its side, the dashboard is one of the first things scraping along the ground. A cracked display or a snapped mounting lug there is not just an inconvenience; on a modern bike the dash often carries lap timers, warning lights and the only readable speed reference a rider has, so losing it mid-weekend can end the day rather than just costing a repair bill. The Impact Absorber is built to take that scrape instead, with the technopolymer panel bearing the abrasion and the elastic mount keeping the shock away from the wiring and the screen behind it, so a rider picking the bike up out of the gravel can usually ride the next session rather than wait for a replacement part.
Fitment and Compatibility
Melotti lists the DC.AP.7211 for the Aprilia RS 660 from 2021 onwards. The identical part is also catalogued for the Aprilia Tuono 660, the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR and the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory, all of which share the same dashboard mounting. It is not listed for the RS 660 Factory variant in Melotti's documentation. Riders also running Melotti's steering limiter (LS.AP.7211), top yoke (PS.AP.721), steering damper bracket (SA.AP.7212) or racing clip-ons (SM.AP.721) on the same bike can fit all of them alongside this absorber.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE, no component certificate and no EC type approval for this dashboard protector. Melotti builds it for racing and closed-circuit use only; riding an RS 660 fitted with it on public roads in Germany is not permitted without a separate entry, and any race meeting applies its own organiser's rules on top of this.
