DescriptionThe whole story▼
A set, not a single shield. The Z1000 of this generation carries a silencer on each side of the tail, each with its own heat shield, and this part number covers both. Ordering one and finding half a pair is a mistake worth avoiding.
Key Features
- A set of carbon fibre shields, one for each silencer
- Replaces the standard shields directly
- Carbon does not take a heat colour the way bare metal does
- Covers the Z1000 from 2014 to 2020
- Akrapovic publishes no weight or performance data for it
What a Heat Shield Is Actually For
Two things, and only one of them is about the rider. It keeps the silencer's outer surface away from a passenger's calf and from luggage straps, and it keeps radiant heat off the bodywork behind it.
Carbon fibre does both while weighing less than the pressed steel or aluminium a factory shield is usually made from, and it stays black rather than turning the straw and blue of heat-cycled metal.
No Published Figures
Akrapovic gives no weight, no thickness and no temperature data for this part. Its whole description is one sentence: the carbon fibre heat shield replaces the stock heat shield.
That is thin, and there is no honest way to fill it in. Nothing is estimated on this page. What is certain is the material, the fitment and that two shields come in the box.
Why People Buy Them
Honestly: because they look right. On a Z1000 the twin silencers sit high and exposed under the tail, and the shield is one of the most visible parts of the motorcycle from behind.
A carbon shield next to a titanium or carbon Akrapovic silencer finishes the installation. Next to a standard steel silencer it looks like what it is — a good part on the wrong exhaust.
Weight Is a Footnote
Carbon is lighter than the standard shield, but a shield is a small pressed part to begin with and nobody will feel the difference. Anyone who tells you a heat shield changes how a motorcycle handles is selling something.
Carbon Against Pressed Metal
A factory heat shield is usually pressed steel or aluminium with a heat-resistant coating. It works, and after a few seasons it discolours where the silencer runs hottest and the coating lifts at the edges.
Woven carbon fibre in a high-temperature resin does not do that. It also has a far lower thermal conductivity than metal, which is the technical reason a carbon shield keeps more heat off a passenger's leg than a metal one of the same size.
Seven Model Years
Kawasaki built this Z1000 from 2014 to 2020 with the same tail and the same twin-silencer layout throughout, so one set covers the run. The Z1000SX sport tourer of the same period is a different motorcycle with a different exhaust.
Fitting
The shields bolt to the existing mounting points on the silencers. No modification and no drilling — the standard shields come off and these go on in their place.
Road Approval
Not applicable. A heat shield is not an emissions or noise part, and no approval attaches to it. Whether the motorcycle is road legal depends on the exhaust behind the shield.
