DescriptionThe whole story▼

An R 1200 R from the early years of the model, with its air- and oil-cooled boxer and Telelever front, still makes a fine everyday motorcycle. Keeping such a bike in good shape means giving wear parts the attention they need, and the front discs sit high on that list. Accossato lists its DK007, a fixed one-piece steel front disc measuring 320 mm, for the R 1200 R across 2006 to 2018, and states that the disc can be exchanged one for one with the part BMW supplied.

Key Features

  • Fixed front brake disc for the BMW R 1200 R, 2006 to 2018
  • Listed for the Classic of 2011 to 2013 and the Sport of 2015 to 2018
  • One steel piece, according to Accossato
  • 320 mm outer diameter, 181 mm inner diameter
  • 5 mm thick new; minimum thickness printed on the disc
  • Accossato lists a fitting kit as required on this bike (not included)
  • One disc per order; two are fitted to the front wheel
  • No German ABE documented, for track use

Construction and Material Quality

A brake disc has two jobs: it gives the pads a flat surface to grip, and it soaks up the heat that every stop produces. The DK007 does both as a single steel part, with no joint between the friction face and the mounting centre. It is 320 mm across the outside, 181 mm across the centre bore and 5 mm thick when new. Accossato, which says it learned its trade with discs in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3, prints the minimum working thickness onto each one it makes.

Keeping an Older Roadster Sharp

The earliest R 1200 R bikes on Accossato's list are now around twenty years old, and many have covered long distances. Brake discs age in ways that are easy to overlook: they wear thin gradually, the edge builds up a lip, and a machine that stands unused for long periods can develop corrosion on the friction face that never quite polishes away. On an older R 1200 R it is worth taking the front wheel out once and looking at the whole assembly properly. Check the wheel bearings for play and roughness, inspect the rim for dents, clean the calipers and look at the state of the brake hoses and the age of the fluid. Then measure both discs at several points against the printed minimum. If one disc needs replacing, the other is usually not far behind, and renewing both keeps the front brake balanced. Accossato advises replacement roughly every thirty to forty thousand kilometres, and earlier when a disc is scored, cracked or worn thin.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK007 for the R 1200 R from 2006 to 2018, split into several entries: 2006 to 2007, 2007 to 2013, 2014 to 2018, the Classic from 2011 to 2013 and the Sport from 2015 to 2018. For the bikes of 2014 to 2018 the list also names the smaller DK006, so owners of those years should measure the fitted disc first; the DK007 matches a disc 320 mm across. The R 1200 R has two front discs, and the price is per disc.

Road Approval

For German road use the DK007 lacks the paperwork: no ABE, no type approval. It is sold for racing and track days.

Scope of Delivery

Delivery: a single DK007 fixed front disc. The R 1200 R needs two for both sides, and bolts and pads are not included.
