DescriptionThe whole story▼

Between the F 800 R's parallel twin and its rear tyre sit a gearbox, two sprockets and a chain, and a chain never runs completely tight. That small amount of slack is why a careless clutch release can make the bike lurch forward with a jolt you feel through the whole drivetrain. Accossato's ESB008 is a CNC-machined clutch lever for the F 800 R of 2009 to 2019, and its adjustable reach lets you make the release as progressive as you want it to be.

  • Short and long blades in selected colours
  • Anodised, CNC-machined aluminium with black hub
  • Fixed lever, no hinge

Construction and Material Quality

A clutch is easiest to modulate when the lever does exactly the same thing every time you pull it. The ESB008 is built for that: machined from aluminium on CNC equipment, anodised, and made as a single piece from the hub to the end of the blade. The hub is black and contains the pivot bore and the reach adjuster; the blade takes one of seven anodised colours. With no folding joint, there is no slack in the lever itself, so the only free play left is the one that belongs to the clutch system, set as the owner's manual describes.

Taking Up the Slack

Every chain-driven motorcycle has some slack in its drive: in the chain, in the gearbox and in the transmission as a whole. When you pull away, change gear or open the throttle after coasting, that slack is taken up, and how gently it happens depends largely on the left hand. Let the clutch out quickly and it disappears in one jolt; let it out progressively and the chain tightens smoothly before the drive arrives in full. In town, where the F 800 R spends many of its hours, this is the difference between a bike that pulls away cleanly and one that snatches at every junction. The same applies to downshifts, where a smooth release avoids a jerk as engine braking takes hold. A lever set within comfortable reach makes a slow, even release easier, because the fingers work in the middle of their range rather than at full stretch. Keeping the chain adjusted to the tension given in the manual helps as well.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the ESB008 for the F 800 R in several entries, from the first bikes of 2009 through the updated model of 2015 onwards, and the listing runs to 2019. The lever fits the original clutch mounting. For the front brake, the EDB001 is listed for the F 800 R from 2009 to 2018 and shares the hub design and the colour range.

Road Approval

No documentation of a German ABE exists for this lever, and it is sold for use on closed tracks.
