Sprint Filter PM201S F1-85 air filter

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

Whether the F1-85 makes sense here is not a question about filtration but about the riding. The 85 in its name is not a pore size, and in Sprint Filter's own test the medium held more of the 100-micron dust than the standard P08, not less. What separates the two is flow and price. A CBR650R ridden to work and serviced by the odometer — oil and valve clearances at the printed intervals — rarely asks for 15,000 l/m²/sec. A CBR650R run in track sessions, held at the top of its rev range lap after lap, does. Same engine, same airbox, same part number, two answers.

Key Features

  • Sprint Filter's racing weave: polyester threads from 22 µm in diameter, 15,000 l/m²/sec, near triple the flow of the P08
  • No filtration traded for the flow: 95.22 % of 100-micron particles held, against 93.13 % for the P08
  • Polyester used dry throughout: no oiling, no re-oiling, no film to reach the intake
  • A generous pleat pack, roughly double the cloth of a typical performance element
  • Drops into the standard airbox where the paper panel sat, with no change to the fuelling
  • Serviceable indefinitely rather than disposable, with two years of Sprint Filter cover

What the two figures are worth, in both directions

Sprint Filter's own comparison measures both media on 100-micron particles, and the F1-85 comes out ahead: 95.22 % against 93.13 % for the P08. The name misleads people here, because the 85 reads like a rating next to the P08's 80 µm; it is not one. The medium is a separate, patented weave of polyester threads from 22 µm in diameter, and it passes 15,000 l/m²/sec against 5,050. The maker states retention for 100-micron particles only, so that is the comparison to hold it to — and on that comparison it flows more and holds more. Where there is a trade, it is price, not protection: finer cloths such as the P14 are the ones that exchange flow for filtration.

If the answer is yes, the riding has to match

Of the two machines on this part number, the faired one can genuinely draw on 15,000 l/m²/sec: bodywork lets a rider hold the top of the rev range for a whole straight, then do it again. That is where the price of the F1-85 is well spent, and it is the use behind the maker's statement that this is the most widely used filter in MotoGP, WorldSBK and Superstock. On a CBR650R that seldom holds full throttle for long, the PM201S F1-85 is simply the costlier member of the family: among the dearer elements in the catalogue, it buys capacity nothing calls on. The P08 (80 µm, 5,050 l/m²/sec) is the road answer.

Care and cleaning

Between sessions the element comes out, is held to the light and cleaned: a part that is inspected, not ordered. Compressed air does most of the work, applied to the clean face so the dirt leaves the way it entered. If water is called for, use it lukewarm with a mild detergent and rinse until clear, then let it dry in moving air — no hairdryer, no radiator, no flame, since heat finishes this medium off. Refit it dry and bare.

Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the Honda CBR650R, 2019 to 2026. The same element serves two motorcycles: this one and the unfaired CB650R of the same years. Both appear under the Fitment tab; the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
