Something is unusual about this element on a road motorcycle: neither half of what it does can be felt. The five microns separating its weave from the standard one are below anything a rider could notice, and the flow ceiling it raises sits above anything an R12 nineT asks for on public roads. Both the benefit and the cost are invisible from the saddle. That leaves PM213S F1-85 as a purchase justified by a use — track days, a race weekend, an engine built to want it — never by an impression gathered on the way home.
Key Features
- 85-micron dry polyester, five microns opener than the standard weave
- 15,000 l/m²/sec of rated flow, against 5,050 for the standard element
- 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron particles in the maker's test
- Dry throughout and never oiled, nothing to reach the intake sensors
- Identical panel shape, into the unmodified series airbox, no remap
- Cleaned with compressed air and reused, two years of warranty
Five microns, and what they are
Eighty against eighty-five. The whole difference between the two weaves is a fraction of the thickness of a human hair. It is not nothing, since an opener cloth passes more of the fine fraction continuously, but it is far too small to perceive, to hear, or to see in an element held to the light. The specification is the only place the two differ, so the specification has to decide — and it describes a job, not a quality.
What the open weave does give back
One thing, quietly: it lets go of what it caught. Cleaning is where a coarse cloth is at its best: compressed air moves the load out of an eighty-five-micron weave more completely than out of a closer one, so after many cycles the element returns nearer to the state it began in. Across a long ownership that is a real property, not a marketing one. It is not, on its own, worth three times the standard element's outlay on a machine that never sees a circuit, and it is certainly not power: nothing dropped into a series airbox lifts a standard machine's output.
Care and cleaning
The PM213S F1-85 is regenerated, not replaced. Compressed air goes to the clean face and pushes the load out through the surface that trapped it; from the dirty side it would be driven deeper into the weave. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent takes over when air has done what it can, rinsed until the water is clear. Drying is passive: moving air, room temperature, as long as it needs, because heat is what reliably destroys these elements. It goes back dry, with nothing applied. The Downloads tab carries the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R12 nineT of 2025 and 2026, a direct replacement in the standard airbox. This number covers three machines: the R12 nineT, the R12, and the R nineT built between 2021 and 2024, from which both current bikes took the housing. The rest of the family is elsewhere: the 2014 to 2016 R nineT and every R nineT Scrambler take other numbers, the Scrambler even in years when it was sold beside the 2021 to 2024 roadster. Year and variant together decide. The Fitment tab shows all three.
