Set the two specifications side by side and one reads like a misprint. This element filters at 85 microns, where the standard woven panel for the same 550 cc Tornado airbox filters at 80 — a wider aperture, and therefore less filtration, on the part that costs a multiple. Then read the measured retention: 95.22 % of 100-micron particles for the F1-85, against 93.13 % for the standard weave. Both figures are published, neither cancels the other out, and seeing why is most of what there is to understand.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester, supplied without oil and never given any afterwards
- An 85-micron aperture rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec, the fastest medium in the range
- Retention measured at 95.22 % of 100-micron particles, against 93.13 % for the P08
- Made for the airbox of the 550 cc Benelli Tornado, model years 2025–2026
- Roughly twice the filtering fabric of other performance elements, in the series frame
- Serviced with compressed air, refitted, and warranted for two years from purchase
A rating and a measurement answer different questions
The micron figure describes the medium: how wide the openings in the weave are. The percentage describes an outcome — how much of a population of particles at one stated size, here 100 microns, a test found held back. A hundred microns is well above both apertures, so both cloths stop nearly all of it, and the small gap between the two results was measured up in that band rather than down at the aperture. Read as a pair on the 550 cc Tornado's airbox they say something worth knowing: the coarser rating did not produce the worse result in the test that was run. Read separately, either one misleads.
The figure that really separates them
It is the flow rating. 15,000 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard panel in the same 550 cc airbox is close to three times the throughput, and delivering that is what this cloth exists for — a racing specification, catalogued as one. What it asks in return deserves saying plainly: Sprint Filter lists it at close to three and a half times the standard element for this airbox, which is the clearest statement available of who it was drawn for. And it will not make a standard 550 cc Tornado noticeably stronger. No slot-in element does that, whichever weave sits in the frame.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, held to the clean face and worked outwards, is the routine — the trapped load leaves the weave along the path it entered by. A film that air will not shift comes away under hand-warm water with a little mild detergent, rinsed until nothing further leaves the cloth. Drying is ambient and unhurried, because heat is what damages polyester: no hot-air gun, no radiator, no flame. The PM209S F1-85 returns to the box dry and untreated, and the maintenance sheet is under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the airbox of the Benelli Tornado with 550 cm³, built in 2025 and 2026 — capacity and year are both part of the fitment. Five machines in total take this racing code, across Benelli and QJ Motor; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
