Sprint Filter CM135S air filter

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Rivale is the supermoto in MV's range, and supermotos get ridden in a particular way: short, sharp journeys, often begun cold and finished before the engine has settled at temperature. That pattern is hard on an air filter for a reason that has nothing to do with dust. Air pulled into a cold intake carries moisture, and an element that spends its life damp is doing a different job from one dried out by a long run.

Key Features

  • Woven polyester that works dry and is meant to be washed — water is part of its service, not a threat to it
  • Around double the filtering area of other performance elements
  • 80 µm aperture, with a rated flow of 5,050 l/m²/sec
  • No oil at any stage, so nothing is carried downstream when the weave is wet
  • Direct exchange for the standard panel, leaving airbox and mapping alone
  • Two years of warranty, and a service life measured against the motorcycle's

Paper and water do not get along

A pleated paper element is a structure held together by its own stiffness. Wet it and the pleats soften, the medium swells, and what it does as it dries is nobody's specification — which is why a soaked paper filter is normally binned rather than reused. Polyester has no such problem. It is washed deliberately, rinsed and dried, and returns to the aperture it started with. For a machine used in short hops through wet months, that is the difference between a filter quietly deteriorating and one that gets reset.

The medium that is not on offer here

Sprint Filter does make a water-repellent weave, the P037, but not as a drop-in for this housing: in the MV range it appears only inside a modified WorldSBK kit for the F3. Saying so plainly is better than implying an upgrade nobody can order. For a Rivale kept on the road, CM135S is the road and track medium and the sensible answer — and it adds no power a rider will detect, which is not what it is sold for.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air, applied to the clean face and directed outwards, is the routine for regular riding. A proper wash follows the same order every time: lukewarm water, a mild detergent, rinsing continued until the water stays clear, then drying in air with no heat of any kind — no flame, no hot air gun, no radiator. Only a fully dry element goes back in, and nothing is applied to it afterwards. Downloads holds Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet.
