The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
A large-capacity scrambler spends a surprising proportion of its life stationary. The styling proposes dirt roads; the reality for most owners is a city, and a city means extended periods at walking pace with a 1187 cc V-twin generating heat directly beneath the rider and almost no moving air to take it away. That is a demanding environment for everything in the frame, and the intake sits in the middle of it. It is also the environment in which the choice between a dry and an oiled element stops being academic.
Key Features
- No oil anywhere in the medium, so warmth has nothing available to mobilise
- Dry 80-micron polyester weave, quoted at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- About twice the filtering surface of a conventional performance panel
- Series airbox, series mapping, no modification of any kind
- Reset with compressed air whenever urban use has loaded it
- Two years of manufacturer cover, running from the day of purchase
Heat without airflow
Under-tank temperatures are normally kept reasonable by the simple fact of movement. Remove the movement and the whole area soaks, which is the condition in which oiled filters are at their least attractive. Warm oil is thin oil; thin oil travels readily on whatever airflow does exist; and what it travels onto is the hot-film sensor, where a coating registers as less air than is genuinely passing. The management system then trims fuel against a false reading, and it has no way of telling you it is doing so. The CM170S contains nothing that could make that journey.
Urban air is dirtier than it looks
The other half of city use is what the engine is actually breathing. Brake dust, tyre particulate and the fine grit that lives permanently in the slipstream of traffic are far less obvious than a gravel road, but they arrive continuously, and they arrive in proportion to how long the engine runs rather than how far the motorcycle travels. A commuter clocking modest distances at low speed accumulates loading remarkably quickly. Roughly double the working area means a given quantity produces a smaller rise in resistance, and the compressor puts the panel back where it started There is no extra power in this for a standard Scrambler and none is offered — only an intake that stays where the factory left it.
Care and cleaning
Blow it through from the clean face outwards, so city grit leaves by the surface that caught it. Where air is no longer enough, wash in tepid water with a mild detergent and go on rinsing while the water still discolours. Drying is done in still room air, completely, and with nothing warm involved — no heat gun, no radiator, no flame — because a distorted weave passes inspection and still fails at its job. Refit it dry, with nothing applied to it. The manufacturer's sheet is filed under Downloads.
